A salute to the magic called Womanhood!

5.30 AM in the morning: Aargh!! Start of another long day. The pickup cab for morning shift comes at 6:30. If I don't rush, I will miss the cab and then I will need to board a govt. bus and then a rickshaw, call in late at office and huff and puff and sweat it right in the morning. But my bed pulls me back like a loving wife and kisses me off to sleep again!!

6 AM: Oh shit!! I'm late yet again. With bleary, sleepy eyes I push myself off the bed and run to brush my teeth. God!! I will need to make coffee for myself. Poor mom, I can't wake her up at this hour. And then I hear my mom's voice. What? It's just 6 and she's already up?! She just went to sleep at 2! I go to the kitchen and there she is making coffee and toast for me; scolding me for not waking up in time and having to rush to office like a madman. I don't utter a word. I gulp the coffee down and run back to my room to get ready.

What made her wake up? Her son is 24 years old, quite grown up enough to take care of himself. As immature as she knows he is, he can make a coffee for himself. He should! Even then, why did she wake up?
When I offer to do the dishes after dinner or do it myself, sometimes, why does she push me away and do it herself despite having toiled all day long (all her life) in the kitchen? Why is she so keen on not having dinner without me? Motherhood is the answer, she told me with a wholehearted smile.

It really makes me wonder what keeps women like my mother go on like this forever; forgetting about themselves, their comforts, their likes and dislikes and just live for their husbands and children. I don't remember my mother ever talking about a favourite dish of hers but she has my favourite dish's name at the back of her hand. Even when she is ill and down, she wants to cook the most tastiest lunch for her son. Another thing that fascinates me is that if every woman claims salary for the household chores that she carries out all her life, they would be richer than their husbands. Its a pure magic that she is there everywhere: no single folly, no saying "I forgot that', no saying "I am tired, I can't do this". She is always ready. She bears the brunt for her husband having a bad day at office. She gets to see a moody face for her son being told off by his teacher at school. For all the hardships that are doled out to her by her husband, children and the wretched society, she smiles back and gets on with her work, seldom complaining. Being a woman in this world is a thankless existence, I believe.

It was quite hearty when a manager of mine recently spoke lovingly about his wife and how he shares household work with her. I really wish all men in this world started thinking like him. No diamond rings, no fancy outfits, no 5-star lunches.. Just a "Thank you" is all that she needs to feel worthy of her existence. A kind loving word is all that she needs to sleep peacefully at the end of a long tiring day. My request to all fellow-men - PLEASE RESPECT WOMANHOOD. She won't be around forever!

Each and every word. So true. Mothers are god's gift.
I had always been really ignorant about what sacrifices and things my mom does for me. But some events changed that. Now I thank god for her existence every second but the cant-express-feelings jerk that I am I have never summoned up the courage to say her thank you :( :(

@Anonymous - if not a thank you, a kind word or act would do. Maybe something as simple as a hug. Remember, you came from her womb, her flesh - no one is going to understand you like how she does :)

BTW, thanks for taking time out to read my blog :)

Well, coming from a guy, the words seem even more precious. As you said, a simple "Thank You" can make a all the difference.

I'm new to your blog, but I'm already falling in love with your style of writing, and more importantly the views you have expressed.
